Totkomlos

Totkomlos is a town from Bekes district with many minorities. For the first time the locality was mentioned in 1219. The old name of the place was Komlos. The town was mentioned with this name between 1557 and 1558 when it had only 9 houses. From the XVIII th century it was given the name Komlosul Mare and in the first half of the century was mentioned as a field region. In 1746 in locality were colonized 80 slovak families of protestant religion, they were brought from Szentandras and Szarvas. At their origin they were coming from Gemes, Hont, Moagrad and Zvolen regions. They brought in Totkomlos a protestant priest and a teacher. The present day church was finished in 1795.

 The oldest names and families in the town are: Roszkos, Toth, Riharszkz, Motyovszky, Lehoczky, Bartosik.

 For a period of 100 years in town there were only Slovaks. From the XIXth century in town came Hungarian families. During the census from 1890 in Totkomlos were mentioned 1673 houses and 9636 inhabitants and they had 12 schools. The first shoes factory from the east of Hungary was also mentioned in Totkomlos. The town had for 40 years a group of amateurs actors, they were all Slovaks.

 The town has a town hall, a protestant church, a catholic church, a reformation church, a Slovak secondary school, a house of culture, an ethnographic collection, two traditional Slovak houses- in the present day they are museums, thermal watering place. In the front of the protestant church there is a monument dedicated to the world war heroes.
